Stealthy, Purposeful and Practical
My first Pilot VP, and I'm very impressed! The quality of this pen, especially for the price, is just amazing. The retractable gold nib, while small, writes consistently and smoothly, with just the right amount of feedback and wetness. The click mechanism is solid, with just the right amount of force required that there is no way the nib could accidentally deploy in the pocket, and there is a difference in feel between deploying/ retracting, so that with some practice you don't have to look at the nib to know what state the pen is in. The brass body is very well balanced and has a reassuring weight without feeling at all heavy. The converter is easy to fill, and the entire converter/nib unit can be replaced for about 1/2 the cost of the pen, great for trying different nib sizes, exchanging to other VPs (I think there will be more in my future ;), and it makes me more confident using the pen in everyday use knowing that an accident is not eye-wateringly expensive as it would be with many gold-nibbed FPs. This is an excellent all-around fountain pen, and especially good in situations where you don't want to draw attention to your writing instrument. I used it to take field notes on a site visit the other day, and no one knew I was using a gold-nibbed fountain pen; to the casual, non-pen person observer, it looks like a retractable ball point. It makes you feel like a stealthy fountain pen ninja! (But remember, NEVER loan your VP to a non-fountain pen person). Last but not least, Smruti Pens provided excellent, friendly service, and the pen and notebook I ordered came well wrapped and with a hand-written note and some gifts! I will definitely be buying more from them in the future :).
