Hermann Hesse spent eleven years writing The Glass Bead Game. Wearingeul spent that same patience turning it into a pen.
This is the second release in the Preface Series, Wearingeul's debut line of fountain pens — and the first was inks. That order matters. Every Preface pen starts life as a color story lifted straight from Wearingeul's Monthly World Literature ink collection, then gets poured into resin. The Glass Bead Game ink came first: a quiet mix of pink and green built to echo Hesse's Castalia, a fictional province where scholars devote their lives to an abstract game connecting music, math, and philosophy into a single elegant system. The pen followed, carrying that same palette in cellulose acetate, with a fine shimmer running through the barrel and cap that catches light without shouting for it.
No two pens match exactly. The acetate is poured and cut individually, so the marbling on your pen — where the pink pools, how the green threads through it — belongs only to that one barrel. Silver trim closes out the design, understated on purpose, so the resin stays the focus.
Inside the cap: a stainless steel nib, available in Fine or Medium, smooth from the first stroke and easy to live with day to day. The pen ships with a converter, so it's ready for bottled ink out of the box — including, if you want the full circle, a bottle of The Glass Bead Game itself.
This isn't a pen that needs the ink to make sense. But paired with it, you're holding both halves of the same idea Wearingeul had when they built this line: that a color and a story can live in the same object.
